Shadow Needs Has A New Name
Ok, given restrictions on only being able to reserve your own BF2 name, or a name that doesn't exist in BF2, virtually every option was invalidated. Plus, as they removed the option of including any non-alphanumeric characters other than - and _, [FGI]Shadow was also ruled out.
In the end I tried one last name that I hadn't actually considered previously - and it worked, although I really didn't expect it to. So in 2142 I'll be [FGI]Emergent.

Speaking of schattenjager michael - i just started playing through GK again. One of the best adventure games EVAR!
[FGI]Shadow would still work, but could be a little awkward should we ever want to change tag for some reason.
