Kelsall, can you give us an idea of when you're going to get down to your beach house (as I figure you should be the 1st down there)?

Do people going down on Thursday night want to meet up somewhere and go convoy style? I'll be taking my car and Kelsall his, so where is a good place to meet? Good ideas. I'm planning on leaving as soon after 5PM as possible. Hopefully leave work a bit early, get home, pack stuff into the car and leave by about 5:30. Get down there around 7, setup and start the first BBQ. All depends on Dravid's movements.

Depart Thursday Evening 13th March 2008

Return Sunday Evening 16th March 2008

Apply now for annual leave for Friday 14th March!

Gentlemen, at FND on the 8th of Feb, J-Dawgg, Lambeaux and myself X-sane hatched an idea. It evolved while walking to a place of food consumption and culminated in the sending of a message you should have all recieved by now "OMGWTFBHW". It was met with puzzled replies ranging from "?" to "you must be really drunk". Not so I say!

Thus here is the deal. For those interested, we take Friday the 14th March as annual leave. We depart for my beach house on Thursday evening after work, get settled in and have a BBQ and a few tin's. I will NOT be bringing our boat to further increase the awesomeness that would have been this weekend. Those that can't get Friday off, just come ASAP on Friday arvo so as not to miss BBQ and tin's.

The next day we get up and cook some bacon and eggs on the BBQ, go fishing/water skiing/ walking/sight seeing/relaxing etc. Have some more BBQ and tin's. Then some more tin's and probably another BBQ with perhaps some vod vod for a change or tin's for those that don't like change. Then more sleep. Rinse and repeat.

We will head back on Sunday once we are re-hydrated from the festivities.

There was talk of bring a keg or two with us. Those in the know should post literage of a keg and cost of the equipment etc. Lambeaux to organise.

Checklist:

Beer/spirits/mixers for three nights.

Some more beer to be on the safe side or money for the local bottle-0.

Sleeping bag and pillow for retirement or sleeping off alcohol.

BBQ food stuffs. I got sauce and everything like that. Just meat. Is there a fridge at the place?

Bunch of stuff for nibbles while cooking the BBQ or beer o'clock.

All the obvious clothes for your wearing. Further to this however, you will need shorts for swimming (no budgie smugglers please as no one wants to see them) and for water sports . Not explained later.

Some car's for driving. Car pool where possible.

Sunscreen cos the second day in the sun will hurt alot (sorry just had to spell it like that!). Bring sunscreen, n00bs.

Towel and beach towel.

Beach cricket gear biatches!

Tents

In terms of sleeping, the beach house will sleep 4 people in beds if the double bed is shared. There is room for 1 on the couch and 1 on the floor if you bring a mattress. That equates to 6 in the house. So now we need tents for the rest of you. All your stuff can stay inside, but we'll need some tents for sleeping and also for evicting snorers! I shotgun sleeping on my mattress inside... preferably under the pool table.. if there is one.

I shall bring Dad's SuperTent(tm). It is a monster three-room type thing. Rated for 12 people but I would imagine it would be super-comfy with six. We've also got a bunch (6 - though I need to double check) collapsible bed thingies which should be more comfortable than mats or inflatables. I'll confirm specifics and post details. Sweet work. I'll mow a big are for you ;)

How many people are going to be making use of the tent then? I've pulled it out from under the house - it specifies room for up to ten people (i don't think we want that many - it should do six real comfy though). I've got some aluminium framed cot things which I'll bring but I don't want to bring any that won't be used (they pack up pretty small but are still a bit bulky to bring if not needed). I have six available (two of which are bigger ones for freaky tall people). Who wants to use one? The other issue is carspace. I'll put it all together in a pile today but im thinking if I bring more than a few of the cots it won't all fit into Duncan's car along with three of us. If anyone has spare carspace we should organise to divide up some of the gear. Oh and one more thing - if the tent and cots are needed for saturday night I'll need people to take responsibility for packing them up and bringing them back safely since I'm leaving sat arvo.

UPDATE: Tent is fine - cots are out, there are only a few because some of the extra cots I counted are actually nifty folding chairs (which I'll bring if space allows). Bring lilos or mats or whatever.

Shadow would like tentage! Shadow doesn't have his own tent :(

Water clothes

For swimming, the water has the potential to be cold. Without the boat, we won't have water skis or a sea biscuit (a big round tyre thing you sit in, get pulled along and fall out of). The sea biscuit wouldn't have involved you going in the water, but merely sitting on top of it. And if you had fallen out, you wouldn't have been thinking about the water temperature anyways so wouldn't have been an issue. Basically, you can bring water attire if you want to swim or snorkel. This sounds amazingly freakin sweet. This would have sounded amazingly freakin sweet.

Secondly here, if you have it, bring snorkelling gear. There are some great places to snorkel if your up for it. There is a shipwreck about 5m offshore around at Fortescue Bay. This includes a 45m walk to get there, but its fun once we do. And at White Beach we can get abalone for the BBQ which would be awesome!

Attending

What's the plan for womenfolk? they were at camping last time AFAIK. Has anyone asked their significant other, are you planning on it?

If they are happy being around us in the state we will be in then thats fine haha. I never really thought about it. I'll leave that for you guys to work out.

I'll see if Sarah wants to come. Either way I'll be in :)

I haven't asked Diana yet but I don't think she'd say "yes" unless she knew there'd be at least one other chick there. It'd be like being the only chick at a lan.

I've been intending to ask Tasha but it keeps slipping my mind.

I wouldnt hold out for Phils attendance, but I'll run it by her just the same

Looking like a sausage fest! hha

Here you go. Fill this out to organise:

If possible I'd rather not take my car (it's earned a rest :P). If I could get a lift up with someone on Thursday and back with Beren on Saturday arvo (I gots a friends birthday party) that would be tops. I'll be going down on Thursday with spare room in the car, will have to come back on my own as I'll be stopping off at my parents place on Sunday arvo, lift is fine

Yup lift back is fine :)

Ok so it looks like I'll be getting a lift down with Beren, but he's leaving Saturday arvo, so is anyone who's staying til Sunday able to give me a lift back?

Since Mick and Sarah are going back on Saturday with Beren, I'll most likely be available for liftage.

Supplied by me for everyone

  • Breakfast cereals
  • Bread and spreads
  • A big OMGWTF woodfired BBQ
  • BBQ cooking supplies and sauces
  • All the pots, pans, plates, bowls and cutlery
  • Stove and grill and your very own washing up sink
  • Fridge with freezer (though freezer has limited space)
  • Normal shampoo. If you are a girl and need to bring your own, feel free.
  • One single mattress and one double mattress (you will need to bring sleeping bags and pillows cos I can't be bothered to wash all the sheets after you's! There'll be a sheet over the mattress though.

If you don't eat BBQ then you'll have to fend for yourself.

You'll need to bring eggs, bacon and pancakes if you want that in the morning. Likewise if you want fish for breakfast, you'll have to catch it yourself or ask the lucky bastard next to you nicely for some of his.

This is what Anthony is bringing for himself (you should aim for roughly the same)

  • Four general changes of clothes, plenty of warmth, but some shorts too.
  • Walking shoes, thongs/sandals.
  • Pillow and sleeping bag
  • I have a bed down there, but you'll have to bring tent and or mattress yourselves as Dave and his Fiancee have the double bed already.
  • Towel and beach towel
  • Wetsuit, boardies (for the beach for whatever reason)
  • Mask and snorkel, weight belt, abalone knife and bag
  • BBQ food stuffs for Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
  • Chips and biscuits and stuff cos I get hungry
  • Pancake premix, bacon, eggs
  • A slab of Heineken, or a mix of 12 Heineken and 12 Becks, or just a slab of each haha
  • Juice, cordial and mixer
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellant

What there is not

  • I'll add to this as I think of it

Cost

Lastly, depending on what we could have done on the water and how much, the boat would have eaten my bank. All I would have asked for is for everyone to share the cost of the refill at the end. It was likely to be about $100 and so it wouldn't have been much split ~10 ways. However, this is a moot point now so there is no cost to this weekend other than car pooling donations.

Directions

Coming from Hobart, go towards Port Arthur. At Sorell turn right at the traffic light. Go forwards through Forcett, Copping, Dunalley (left across bridge), Murdunna, Eaglehawk Neck, Taranna then to the red dot about 6 k's on. Go past the Fortesque Bay turnoff we took the last camping trip.

You will first hit the red dot on your way to Port Arthur which is is the start of a tiny district called Oakwood. There is nothing here but a roadside sign saying Oakwood. A large building and parking area on your left and then your first sight the water of Port Arthur. On your left you will see a small gravel road heading along the shore which is a second Fortesque Bay road (different entrance to the one we took camping). Don't take this.

Continue on the main road for about 400m, during which time you will lose sight of the water for the trees, to the green dot which is the beach house. This is 6659 Arthur Highway, Port Arthur. It's got a largeish gravel area in front of it, a gate, and two 5m tall posts either side of the gate and FEK load of trees. Go down and you'll spot a huge grassy cleared area and a house. Voila! Not to be confused with a cleared bit of land about 100m before my driveway on the left. Probably with a campervan on it. Not mine. Go past this and slow down as my driveway is on a rising corner in a 100k/h zone.

If you miss my driveway, you will come across a pink building on your left after about another 200m. This is seascape (which is where Martin Bryant ended his campaign) and is not me. Go back. IF you manage to hit the black dot, this is the Fox and Hounds hotel. It's an English style white building with black, wooden criss cross beams. Large area with carpark. Also our local bottle-0 for the weekend. Can't miss this one, again, turn around.

Total travel time from hobart 1h 10m.

I'm going to bring the classiness level way down and supply Jägerbombs :P I also just got an awesome set of Bavarian pewter shooters for my birthday I'll bring for straight shots (no way these are getting dropped in anything...).
