Music Talk

I've been hitting the wiki harder than usual, mostly in response to the RSS feed being dominated by the fucking cricket page... just kidding - you guys are great and cricket is awesome etc. (you guys have no idea if I'm joking or not do you?...)

Anyways, I realised that the wiki has become pretty fucking huge and rather messy - orphaned pages, abandoned pages, completely fucking inexplicable pages and so forth. So I'm gradually going to try and sort it out a bit. To start with is this page - the Music page. My idea is that this page itself can be a hub for basic discussion (people's recommendations and current listening type messages - last.FM people can put up their embeddy things). So sort of like the movie page but then branching of into the various music related pages around (hottest 100 tipping archives and top five lists and whatnot - links come later since I'm lazy) - this is an awesome idea which took me 2 years to get around to reading.

I shall kick it off with the following:

Robbers & Cowards by Cold War Kids is the best thing I've listened to this year so far (apparently it came out in 2006 but I hadn't heard anything from them before triple J started playing them). Given that I've been listening to new albums from The New Pornographers and The Go! Team in the past couple of days that's pretty fucking amazing. Unless something magic comes out or the two mentioned releases grow on me severely over the next few weeks it's on track to be my album of the year. This shouldn't be read as a slight for the pornos or Go! Team, both albums are superb - it's just that the Cold War Kids album is disgustingly addictive. Another unexpected recent standout for me is The Con by Tegan and Sarah - Auron and I saw these tiny canadian twins support Little Birdy a couple of years ago. Haven't really paid attention to them since then (wasn't really my thing) but I downloaded the new album after getting one of the singles very much stuck in my head - it's really, really good. So there you go.

Hailivah by The Drones - This would certainly go down as one of my favourite albums of all time, I know it's so last year but I struggle to keep up with the latest music. Anyway as far as appocolyptic indie rock goes, these guys have no equal. I must admit I became intrigued with them when they recorded Gala Mill in an abandoned Mill at the farm of Gala on the east coast of Tassie. But to my thinking, the addition of Dan Luscombe on guitar has tightened up their music and this is an awesome album. I highly recommend seeing these guys live and Gareth and Dan were pretty fantastic supporting Augie Mach last time I saw them. Anyway links to songs which might suck you in.
