Does anyone have opinions on the Intel Conroe (Core 2 Duo) processor about to come out in a few days. I have looked at a few extensive reviews, and can I say, I WANT ONE! I'm predominately AMD, but I am just blown out of the water by this CPU's performace and price. $550 for a CPU that is faster than the AMD FX62 in every benchmark run. It overclocks something chronic. The AMD FX62 (price) equivelant version is faster than it by about 30% on average. It would give me a good excuse for a small graphics update too, and then there is RAM also, and a mobo. I priced the upgrade at $1600 DYI. Dual core, I want one.

Yeah, I have done some reading on them and they seem brilliant. If I was in the market I'd definitly be looking at Conroe. I hear they Fold like hell. ;) I've been reading a bit about how this could be the next turning point in the CPU market. With Conroe out Intel almost have a blank canvas (no more Netburst, yay!) and things are really going to go up from here, AMD meanwhile are having trouble making enough chips and their output will only get lower as they transition to more dual-core production (larger die size == less chips per wafer). AMD have HT3.0 on it's way which should be briliant and they still have the onboard memory controller advantage, but they need to be able to do something special with their X2 lines to mess with Intel now.

Ivans new box will sport this, watch for unstoppable action in icy tower!

I think we've all seen this before, but it is on it's way now. Keep an eye out at TasPC for one. :)

fuck taspc, i'll order this thing direct if the price is rihgt

I call bullshit. Not only is it just ridiculous, there is no way it could be viable cost-wise, the most expensinve part of any unit is the screen and this has 108 of them, colour no less. That and the link is a page on the website of a fucking DESIGN FIRM. They're artists, RUSSIAN artists. They just make up conceptual designs:

"Art. Lebedev Studio was founded in 1995. At present, it is the largest design company in Russia.

We do industrial design, graphic design, web design and interface engineering. We have our own publishing house, a media department, and three software teams.

Our job is to find elegant and effective solutions to the problems our clients are faced with."

So yeah, I reckon it's bullshit. It's a concept design and there isn't any evidence to show that it is actually being produced. Why would you bother anyway?

hockay, you have some good points there. my point still stands: i will buy one if they are the right price, oh and because they are TOTALLY AWESOME if you didnt see it.

why are you such a sad, agressive panda? maybe the cost of the phone they were comparing it to are like $99999 because everybody steals the telecoms anntennas, so they have to be able to work of signals in china or somethign

The reason I posted this was that we had seen this half way through 2005 and it was really bloody cools. There was then an announcement that they would finally come to market. I do not claim they will be anything resembling cheap but I want one and that is what this page is about.

And here it is: link. Wow i'm impressed... three keys (that's 108-105 not that i'm counting). Three keys for US$160 (that's US$53.33 per key not that i'm counting). So an actual keyboard would cost US$5759.64 - Bargain! Sure it's first generation and sure it will become cheaper and it is definitely cool - I just don't see how it could ever be more cost effective than laying a touch-screen monitor on your desk. The only advantage would be having keys that click.
