Battalion 360

As a side note, I've been thinking we should have a little 360 LAN at some point after I'm unbroken. I kind of already have 2 big enough TVs in my place, would just have to figure out some decent way of placing the second one so that a few people can gather around it.

Interesting article I read the other day, in 2008 Wii outsold XBox 360 and PS3 in Australia by 3 to 1 (they sold about 685,000 Wii's, 237,000 XBox 360 and 217,000 PS3's).  For as long as it has been on the market, the Wii has always outsold the 360 and PS3 (by a very large margin) - but they're not really contesting the same space.

In other news J-Dwagg might be considering a console, but has not yet decided which one. It'll probably be between PS3 and Wii, but I need to find out what I want out of a console. Note that there is an anticipated drop in PS3 prices which might bring them down to around $550. Not particularly into XBox 360.

As you say, it all depends on what you want out of a console.  If you want the one with the best game library (and IMO the best controller by far) the 360 is easily the way to go.  If you have or plan to get an HDTV, the PS3 offers ok value despite it's high price because of Blu-ray.  PS3 and 360 both have good media centre capabilities if you're into that sort of thing.  If you're happy with the existing title lineup and only expect one good game to come out a year get a Wii.

I can second all of the above points.  The Wii is fun (and in my opinion it has enough really good games to warrant a purchase) but if you are after a console for gaming then the 360 is the way to go.  Summary - the Wii is fun but if you want something to replace or augment PC style gaming then get a 360.  In fact just get a 360 so that we can have xbox lans at my new house :P

Agreed. I fell in love with my 360 while I was laid up on my back in pain for a week. Best game library (by a country mile), best media center capabilities (stream DivX's from your PC? Yes please) and certainly best controller. PS3 has advantages in the form of Blu-Ray and its online play offering doesn't require a silly subscription (although only Duncan has one, so you'd be stuck playing with randoms online). Wii is fun when you have friends over for a while, but it just doesn't have the staying power for general use, it really is targetted at younger children and non-gamers and most people tend to buy one, play it for a while then get sick of it and leave it to gather dust. Biggest selling point for 360 is probably the simple fact that we ALL have one at this point, so the greatest potential for multiplayer.

Firstly - I have Gold as well, Duncan and I are going through Resident Evil 5 co-op at the moment (when I'm not packing and stuff). The rest of you guys need to get Gold so that we can play Gears 2 Horde Mode.  Anyways, I've thought a bit about how xbox lans would work and I reckon VGA adapters would be a worthwhile investment - that way instead of people lugging around TVs they can just bring an LCD monitor.  Not really great for splitscreen but for a single user it's perfect.

Another advantage for the 360 is the fact that you'd have an existing group of people to steal games from.  I have a pretty big library (gogo EB 50% off sale a week after I got the console): 360Games

Having to pay for Xbox360 subscription services and the controllers are the biggest turn off for me on an Xbox360. That and the darn things keep blowing up all the time. Xbox controllers are really akward to use for me. Playstation controllers are much better.

If you buy one now you probably won't have to worry about it blowing up - the hardware has been improved significantly (that and you can't complain about a 3 year warranty on the hardware failure).  Extra controllers you have to buy for any console (and the 360 ones are actually the cheapest).  Controller preference is just a personal thing so that's all you.  On the paid subscription thing - it's not that expensive and I think it worth it for a system that is much more cohesive and better implemented than the PS3's free system.

Keep in mind that you only have to pay for Xbox Live gold if you're going to play online.  The silver (free) account still lets you do everything else including downloading demos/themes/addons/trailers etc. And in terms of demos and such i find the Xbox marketplace better than the PS3 one, e.g. EVERY XBox Live arcade game has a demo whereas most of the downloadable games on the PS3 do not (e.g. Wipeout HD, Pixeljunk Monsters/Eden, Flower).

And just to make it clear the Xbox 360 controller is nothing like the old Xbox controllers. It's about 30,000 times smaller and better in pretty much every imaginable way.

Gears of War online co-op is the coolest thing ever!!!

With news of mr aurons acquisition of a 360 I grabbed one myself yesterday. DAMN! that is some nifty shit. Gears is so cool it hurts. We are playing through it co-op over live and it is seriously the way the game was meant to be played.

K well, I'm in the market for a new gen console, but I'm very torn over which to get. As peeps here have all sorts of consoles, what are your recommendations?

At the moment you have 2 choices: Wii or 360. Fuck paying a grand for a ps3. Seriously.

Wii advantages: Cheap(er), fun party games, more socially acceptable. Virtual console.

Wii disadvantages: No substantial single player offerings as of yet. There is Zelda(True, but a gamecube game tarted up for the controller is the ONLY compelling single player game) Lacklustre online support. Debatable whether the graphics will hold up for an entire generation.

360 advantages: Can play with me and Pazuzu over xbox live (if you are internetted of course) which just happens to be the coolest thing ever. Good lineup of games to be released (Bioshock, Assassins Creed, Halo 3 etc).

360 disadvantages: Still fairly pricy. Not a lot of party-type games. Fair few games that will be released on the PC as well (although I still prefer playing them on the console).

Check this thread to see what are the upcoming games (exclusives and otherwise) for each platform.

Mr Auron's points are all very valid. I've got both a Wii and a 360 now (all but zero chance of ever getting a PS3) and they are both awesome but really very different. The Wii is all about the fun, casual stuff (exceptions exist but are uncommon for now) and the multiplayer is very much about having four people in your living room - though online stuff is coming. the 360 is all about xbox live and the implementation is great (i can be playing joust and will get a note saying the mr auron has come online and we can then jump into a co-op game). Very much about the shooters, online and off.

Very different platforms, both great. Choosing between the two would be tricky and you'd need to think about what you are actually after in a console. If you reckon you'd eventually get both I'd go the 360 first because it has more quality titles out now - the wii will be there by the end of the year though.

Nice! - http://kotaku.com/gaming/no-brainer/microsoft-expands-360-warranties-275370.php

Sweet! - http://kotaku.com/gaming/breaking/halo-3-will-support-4+player-co+op-284497.php

Was going to add that when I saw it earlier in the day but I forgot - prolly better to have a bungie link though

Well look at auron with his 'primary sources'. If you ever even think about putting a citation needed tag on this wiki I will block your IP mother fucker.

BIOSHOCK DEMO ON XBOX LIVE MARKETPLACE OMGZ!!!! Set it downloading this morning and can't wait to leave work five minutes after my boss goes...

Beren: So my 360 died, RRoD. I had semi expected it to happen ages ago and it never did. So i assumed i had one of the good launch boxes. But nope. So i am rather relieved it has died now actually. Well into the 3rd yr of having it, it would have sucked for it to have turned 3 and then RRoD and then not been covered by warrenty. Which probably would have been after i gave it to my brother and bought one with hdmi for me. So really not that bothered by it dying. Although will miss streaming content to the 360 for a few weeks. Anyways, here is a pic:

Oh noes! respectful condolences. As an aside I can see that Shadow and Vanmani have crackdown - I have wanted to play co-op crackdown since I got the game. I shall have to try and catch one of you guys online.

I would lub to play Crackdown coop. Seems to me that'd be a laugh a minute.

Well I'll be renewing my gold subscription when gears 2 comes out (so friday then) so we should totally get some crackdown co-op going. Speaking of which - is everyone getting gears 2? Horde mode looks like a blast.
